Education

Professional

Ray was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1964, the New Jersey State Bar in 1976 and the Florida Bar in 2005.   Ray is a Member of the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court; U.S. Court of Appeals, Second and Third Circuits; and U.S. District Courts of the Southern and Northern Districts of New York. Ray resigned from the NJ Bar in April 2009.

After graduating from NYU Law School in 1964, Ray served as Assistant Counsel to Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller (New York) 1964-65. Ray was called to active duty in the US Army in 1965 and served as an instructor in counterintelligence at the US Army Intelligence School (USAINTS) in Baltimore, MD, attaining the rank of Captain.  Upon leaving the Army in 1967 he became associated with Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison (NYC) in its corporate law department. In 1969, Ray joined the NYC firm of Milgrim Thomajan & Jacobs P.C. (later renamed Milgrim Thomajan & Lee PC) where he served as a member of the corporate law department for 26 years.  In 1995 Ray joined the NYC office of Piper & Marbury LLP (later renamed DLA Piper  Rudnick et al) as a partner.  In 1998 Ray joined the NYC firm of Brock Silverstein LLP (later renamed Reitler Brown & Rosenblatt LLP) as a member.  He retired as a member of Reitler Brown the end of 2003 and continued to serve as counsel to the Firm until 2007.

Ray provides legal advice and representation to U.S. and foreign clients on a variety of international and domestic business matters. He has represented a broad range of clientele, from small software development houses to Fortune 100 companies in their protection, acquisition, marketing, creation and development, transfer, licensing and registration of intellectual property rights. As a close adjunct to his intellectual property practice, Ray has been involved with high-tech startups and venture capital financings for over thirty years.  Ray has also handled a variety of matters involving real estate; construction; secured loans and financings; purchase, sale, lease and financing of airplanes and ships; mergers and acquisitions; and private and public securities offerings.

Ray is the author of Trade Secrets and Copyright Protection of Computer Software, Computer Law Journal Vol. IV, No. 4, Spring 1984. He co-authored the Copyright chapter of Doing Business in China, Juris Publishing, and was a contributor to the copyright chapter in Milgrim on Trade Secrets, by Roger Milgrim, Matthew Bender & Co. (1989-1992) .

Ray is a member of the Florida Bar and the New York State Bar Association. He was an Executive Committee Member of the NYSBA Intellectual Property Section 2001 - 2010.  Ray co-chaired the Intellectual Property Section seminar at the New York State Bar Association Annual Meeting in January 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2005 and has appeared as a panelist or co-chair at several other intellectual property seminars.

The 2006 Manhattan Edition of New York SuperLawyers lists Ray as among the top New York attorneys in the field of Intellectual Property law.

Personal

Ray lives in Jacksonville, FL with his wife, Judith Ann, whom he married in 1967. They have three daughters and three grandsons.  Ray and Judy have become avid golfers since moving to Jacksonville and regularly play at the Queens Harbour Yacht & Country Club course.
